Guest Blog by October Weeks ~~ Smile

Standard

Back in February, I wrote my short story, The Red Barn, in a day and a half. It took one day to edit. The day after that I sent it in to Musa Publishing; they sent me an offer of publication after just one week. I was thrilled, to put it mildly J  I’d been waiting for that moment since I was six years old! I had a smile on my face for week straight, not even the stress of my relationship with my alcoholic boyfriend could wipe it off my face.

See, I love smiling. There are days when I don’t want to, but I do it anyway because eventually, through the course of the day, I’ll feel a hellava lot better because of it. Because I see other people smile back and I know that sometimes, on really bad days, those smiles really matter. A bright spot peeking through the gray clouds.
Over the past few years there have been days when it was very hard for me to smile, and some days I really couldn’t even force it. Those were really dark days. It takes a tremendous amount of stress and anger to wipe the smile off my face.
In April of this year, I ended the 12 year relationship with my ex. After that, I made a vow to myself to smile every day, through pain and stress and anger- even if I have to force one onto my face during the course of the day. I also vowed to never let another person make me feel like I didn’t deserve to be happy, or that I didn’t deserve to be loved or treated like I mattered. Strange thing, good stuff started happening when I started caring for myself and making those changes.
Musa Publishing excepted another story- a novella this time, coming out in January 2013- and I’m buying a house, due to close the 30th of August, the day before my book releases! And I’ve made new friends, and met an awesome man, and I’ve realized just how happy I am with who I am. There’s room for improvement, of course, but that’s perfectly okay J
You know what’s going to make me smile today? Giving everyone reading this blog a chance to win a copy of The Red Barn- coming out this Friday- August 31st! I’m giving away one copy for each of the formats it’s being released in; .PDF, .PRC, .MOBI, and .ePUB.

Standard

Today is the last day to enter to win a copy of Seanan McGuire’s Discount Armageddon. You have until midnight tonight to comment on my post here to be entered.

Author Adrian Phoenix is giving away three signed copies of Rob Thurman’s newest Cal book, Doubletake, which also releases on Monday. To win, she just wants you to tell her who your favorite character is in the Cal world. You have until Monday to enter her contest.

Rob has a contest on her blog for the release as well.

My Bookish Ways has an interview with Tobias Buckell and a giveaway of his new book, Arctic Rising.

Lastly, this isn’t a contest for free books, but it’s awesome anyway — Alan Rickman on the Charlie Rose show. Thanks to agent Nephele Tempest for originally linking to it.

This Is NOT Okay

Standard

I’ve been dealing with computer issues this week (which I blog about tomorrow on Black Ink, White Paper) and I have several more 52 Books in 52 Weeks posts to do, and a links post in the works, but right now I want to talk about something that happened to one of my new favorite authors.

Seanan McGuire is the author of the October Daye novels and the upcoming Discount Armageddon. Discount Armageddon‘s official release date is March 6th, but Amazon decided to ship the physical book several weeks early for some unknown reason. In response, Barnes & Noble also started shipping the books early as well. What they are NOT doing is selling the e-books yet. Those won’t be delivered until the actual release date. And people, supposed fans of Seanan, have decided to heap a truckload of abuse on her head. She has been called greedy, selfish, ungrateful, but worst of all she has been called a bitch. A cunt. A whore.

Seriously? Why is it okay to not only verbally lambaste somebody for a business decision that was not theirs, but to also relegate them to a perceived negative sexual status. Why? Jim C. Hines and Marie Brennan have both chimed in on how inappropriate this is.

I really like Seanan both as an author and as a person. She’s smart, funny, articulate, passionate, and she writes hella good books. So, to show my support for her, here’s the deal: I’m going to buy two copies of Discount Armageddon when it officially goes on sale. One copy will be for me to slaver over and devour and the other will be sent out to one lucky commenter here. (I promise not to get the two of them confused because sending out a book covered in my drool would be gross.)

Praying for a Fellow Writer

Standard

One of my favorite authors, Rob Thurman, was in a very serious car accident several weeks ago. She nearly died. It was touch and go for a while, but as of yesterday, she was awake and off the ventilator!

Unfortunately, this extended stay in the ICU is going to rack up a HUGE hospital bill for Rob, so I’m urging everybody who loves dark, gritty urban fantasy with pretty boys who fight monsters and play with swords and guns to go out and buy her Cal Leandros series.

Nightlife

Moonshine

Madhouse

Deathwish

Roadkill

Blackout

Rob also has two other great series going. I will admit to not having read any of the books in either of these series, but I have the first books of each sitting on my TBR pile and knowing Rob, they’re just as great as the Cal books.

The Trickster series which is set in the same world as the Cal series, but starring a completely different cast of characters.

Trick of the Light

The Grimrose Path

And the Chimera Series which are sci-fi thrillers about genetically altered assassins.

Chimera

Basilisk

To do my part in helping Rob out, I will be offering up a choice of THREE of her books to the winning entry.

Leave a comment on this post with your top three choices to enter.
